Bloom was a wide receiver and punt returner for the University of Colorado football team. He was selected for the first-team Freshman All-America list by the FWAA.

Dec 29, 2022 · After picking a school, Bloom decided not to begin his college football career in 2001 so he could concentrate on preparing for the upcoming Winter Games. When he arrived for spring drills with the Buffaloes in 2002, his new teammates noticed his talents immediately.

Bloom excelled, including wins in the half-mile run and the 100-yard dash (which he accomplished in 9.41 seconds). He donated his $45,000 prize to charity, as the NCAA rules prohibited him from keeping it.

Overall, he won 12 World Cup events and amassed 26 podium finishes, earning his place in the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2012. In between his two Olympic Games, Bloom pursued another love — football — in a brief, two-year career at the University of Colorado.
