Earth’s temporary Second moon has arrived
Earth’s 2nd ‘moon’ has arrived: What you need to know
A second moon has officially entered Earth’s orbit — sort of. Although it’s being called a “mini-moon,” the object is actually an asteroid named 2024 PT5. It has been temporarily captured by Earth’s gravitational pull.
Can you see Earth's new 'mini-moon' with the naked eye?
Sept. 29, Earth captured a new "mini-moon" called 2024 PT5. The bus-size asteroid is expected to orbit our planet for 57 days, but is too small to be visible to amateur skywatchers.
This past Sunday Earth gained a temporary second moon
On Sept. 29, Asteroid 2024 PT5 entered Earth’s gravitational pull. PT5 will orbit in a horseshoe shape, meaning it won’t complete a full circle while under the influence of Earth’s gravity. Once the asteroid finishes its orbit on Nov. 25, it will return to the Arjuna asteroid belt.
The Earth is getting a second, mini-moon, so can I see it? | Hey Ray
This means you will not be able to see this mini-moon with the naked eye. You likely won't be able to see it with a telescope either. You need more sophisticated equipment to see it. If no one told you about it, you honestly wouldn't even know about it.

Earth's Temporary Second Moon: Asteroid 2024 PT5's Two-Month Orbit Explained
Though referred to as a mini-moon, 2024 PT5 won't complete a full orbit around Earth. Instead, it will be a “temporarily captured flyby,” circling around 25 percent of the planet's surface before heading off again into the solar system. These brief encounters are common, and many mini-moons don't stick around long enough to form a stable orbit.
NASA to track temporary ‘mini moon’ asteroid with planetary radar — All you need to know
Earth acquired a temporary mini moon, 2024 PT5, detected by astronomers. NASA will monitor its path, as it orbits for nearly two months before departing in late November, with a potential return in 2055.
