Evacuated residents are waiting in their cars for hours to get permission to return to Los Angeles neighborhoods devastated by the Palisades Fire, which has been burning for three weeks and destroyed thousands of homes and other structures.

Some Pacific Palisades residents said they waited on line for more than two hours Tuesday to get approval to go back to their homes.

The Pacific Coast Highway will be partially reopened this Sunday morning for the first time since the Palisades Fire. Beginning Feb. 2 at 8 a.m., essential traffic can use one lane in each direction. While the Los Angeles Police Department will not hand out re-entry passes, National Guard troops will remain in many areas.

With cleanup and restoration work still ongoing in the wake of the Palisades fire, all areas of Pacific Coast Highway will nonetheless reopen to essential traffic beginning Sunday, though with only one lane open in each direction — and with reduced speeds in effect,

Dodgers Shohei Ohtani, Emmet Sheehan and Ben Casparius visited a fire station in Pacific Palisades to thank firefighters and drop off a check for $10,000.
