Storm Éowyn is set to wreak havoc on Britain in mere hours - and the Met Office has laid bare exactly what's in store for the UK

Dogs could be swept away by powerful waves during Storm Eowyn if they are not kept on leads, the Met Office has warned. Winds of up to 90mph have been forecast across the UK later this week as the first named storm of 2025 makes landfall.

Storm Éowyn is forecast to make landfall in Ireland late on Thursday before moving on to the rest of the UK on Friday according to Met Office models. The storm will bring gusts of 80mph to coastal areas and 60mph inland with potential for a danger to life caused by flying debris.

Storm Eowyn is set to batter the UK on Friday, with wind speeds potentially reaching a staggering 80mph in some areas and up to 60mm of rain expected. The forecaster elaborated: "A band of heavy rain will move northeast across this area later on Thursday night, clearing to the east on Friday morning.", reports Bristol Live.

The Met Office said the newly-named Storm Éowyn could bring powerful gusts to exposed coasts in Northern Ireland, northern England, northwestern Wales and western Scotland.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Mike Silverstone said: “The strongest gusts are likely to be felt across parts of Northern Ireland, northern England, north-western Wales and western Scotland, where exposed sites could get gusts in excess of 80mph, which has the potential to cause impacts for those in these areas.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for wind affecting all regions of Northern Ireland as gusts of up to 90mph are expected. The alert will be in place on Friday, January 24, from 6am until 9pm as Storm Éowyn is expected to bring "very strong winds and widespread disruption".

There are rare amber weather warnings active for North West England, North East England, Northern Ireland and the Scottish Highlands.
