President Donald Trump on Wednesday demanded an apology from the Episcopal bishop of Washington after she made a direct appeal to him during a prayer service marking his inauguration to have mercy on the LGBTQ+ community and migrant workers who are in the United States illegally.

President Donald Trump attended the inaugural prayer service Tuesday at Washington National Cathedral, where a sermon on unity called out the president to "have mercy on the people in our country who are scared.

The Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde’s remarks followed executive actions from Trump to crack down on immigration and roll back protections for trans people.

The Trump administration has already issued executive orders rolling back transgender rights and toughening immigration policies.

The bishop criticized the president's agenda and called on him to show “mercy” on people she claimed were living in fear because Trump was president.
